Oh I see, you live in Europe (so do I)

Well for us in Norway the best value comes from Cambridge, namely the Cambridge 651-BD which has the same DAC/chipset/internal hardware as the Oppo so its pretty much 99% of the same performance (Cambridge has a slightly different sound signature some say, not that I can differentiate that...)

the Cambridge 651-BD is roughly 25-30% cheaper than the Oppo 103 here which is why most people prefer the Cambridge here but some still pay extra for the Oppo.

I don't know why but for some reason: Cambridge is overpriced in US, correctly priced in EU

Oppo is overpriced in EU, correctly priced in US

Since I'm from Norway I went with the Cambridge 651-BD

Got mine for $500 (and Norway's usually way more expensive than the US) and still it costs $800 on Amazon.com :bonk:

Here's the bench test for the 751-BD from Cambridge, which performs EXACTLY like the last generation Oppo-95 :

96% B)

Basically:

Oppo 105 = Cambridge 752
Oppo 103 = Cambridge 652
Oppo 95 = Cambridge 751
Oppo 93 = Cambridge 651

I have the 651 which is a re-skinned Oppo 93.

But it doesn't seem like they've put that player on the test bench ( http://hometheaterhifi.com/content/blu-ray-players-reviews/page-2.html ) and I've never used it personally so I can't judge. If you like it that's perfectly cool, but Cambridge and Oppo should always be checked first before anything else when it comes to players (imo) :D

In terms of colour performance you are correct. You'd have to be a professional or a very concerned videophile to *clearly* spot the differences in colour errors. Same applies to the sound signature/ difference in quality of the DAC chips sets (well trained ears or concerned audiophile)

but its both of those factors combined with:

* support of all physical formats (SACDs, HD-CDs, AVCHDs, DVD-A, Blu-ray Audio, V-CDs, etc)
* Support of all media files (Mp4, Mp3, FLAC, ALAC, WAV, WMA etc)
* support of all apps/content like Netflix, hulu etc
* quality of up scaling SD content like DVDs to 1080p, cheap players do a HORRIBLE job, Oppos (and all the re-skins like Cambridge, Theta Digital, Goldmund etc) do a fantastic job of making DVDs as close to BD quality as possible
* Loading times, faster processor/loading mechanisms mean that some blu-ray players might load a film in 45 seconds while other cheaper ones might take 1 minute and 40 seconds
* Fan noise, disk-rotating noise and so on varies

^ It only takes 500 dollars to get all of those perfected. Everything above $499 is AUDIO related like the Oppo 105 ($1200) which comes with balanced XLR ports ESS Sabre 9018 DAC chip sets (best DAC chip on the market?) And everything above $1200 is what you could call a waste as even the most high end and ridiculously priced cinemas will happily use an Oppo 105 ($1200) with their million dollar setups. You're paying for the brand name and possible build quality (titanium, gold, platinum etc)

The $8000 mcintosh is a complete joke, same with the Goldmund Reference for $135,000 but then again you can ask yourself...

my $500 Seiko watch tells time accurately, does a $4 million reference 2499 Platinum Patek Philippe tell time more accurately? Are the extra features of said Patek Philippe worth me spending an extra $3 999 500 ?

Nuances eh?

Like being bent over by some company who sells those parts that cost maybe a 100 bucks for thousands for absolutely no discernible difference.

That can be said about a lot of things though..

But yea, Unfortunately in audio it is really easy to buy snake oil, for a lot of money. Just have to be knowledgeable about what you're doing.
