but that shouldn't be the cause of my high as fuck idles and ridiculous temps when running a test.

Yes, that will be the cause of the higher temps. At least part of it.

It can. Too much TC is just as bad as too little.

Can be far worse depending on amount.
tim is only supposed to remove the air gap nothing more.
plus spreading can create air pockets.
