Well, most ISP are using fiber now. But most don't run fiber all the way to the house.
As for Canada, I'll have to take your word for it.
It's easy to check, though. Just go to where ever the inet FIRST hooks to your house...open the box, and look at the connection. If it's just coax, then it's copper to the house, the fiber to the house is just that...the end of the connector where it first connects to the house is ...a fiber cable. You can SEE the fiber optic strands if you unplug the connector.
On the Verizon side of the box (outdoors) the cable looks sort of like this...raw fiber bundle, shaped as shown in the pic. ISPs now seem to have different termination methods, so I can't be sure, if it's fiber or coax...

When I was watching them install it, I was amazed at the end of the cable. It looked (sort of like the pic) like they just had a cable with a few hundred fibers in it, a metal screw on connector, and the ends of the fibers looked like they had been turned on a lathe...although it's more likely, they used something like a hot/knife/stripper/shaper ...kind of tool.
Even more likely, they probably have a machine that did those cables. Each fiber was still an individual fiber, no type of insulation around each of the hundreds of fibers. Somehow, they got them shaped like in the drawing above.
They weren't even melted together or anything...like I said...it looked more like lathe work.

/e I was amazed. I had worked with fiber way back it the day, (like 1983-ish) and there were no...pre terminated cables like this. We were pretty much doing every connection by hand with hot...hand tools.

I also googled fiber cable termination, and it seems that there are hundreds of different kinds now.
My FIOS was installed about 7-8 years ago.
