I believe that they put them underground. They didn't really tear up the city because there is always construction going on. Also, they haven't built it for all of Kansas City. South KC (somewhat poorer area) and Midland (Westport, Plaza) both have Google Fiber. North KC (more prominent area) doesn't yet have Google Fiber. I went last week to look at an apartment in North KC and fell in love. The price was right, everything was beautiful, and then she laid this on me, "We have Comcast." So I'll be living in Westport for another year!

So basically it gets ran into new neighborhoods while they are being built right?

The part of town I live in is like 50 years old there's no construction going on around here.

And what's Bell gonna do? Dig it all up to run lines without even having a guarantee that everyone will switch to the service anyway? Shits bs they gotta change the law. At my cottage in Quebec were allowed overhead fiber optic and it took them no time to set us up lol

No, the newer neighborhoods are all in North KC. Google actually went through and laid the underground fiber lines to south KC and midland (which are all long standing communities). Most of the apartment complexes paid to have Google Fiber installed. So the fiber lines are already laid for the individual homes and smaller apartment complexes that can't afford it. Google Fiber is a big selling point for Kansas City, which is why there has been an influx out of North KC and into South KC and Midland.

Oh wow, I hope they do that around here then.

Right now there's fiber lines running like to the main box in the hood but then copper from the box to each home. Only allows for 50mbps download lol

Do y'all get the lines ran overhead or do the dig up full neighborhoods and put the lines underground? Or do they only run them in new neighborhoods being built?

In my city it's bs and it's against the law to run them overhead, but I can't picture them tearing up the whole city to run these lines

They run them underground here.

The manhole covers don't only go to sewers, they also go to cable runs, gas lines etc.
When I was in Cali, they had just passed a law about no overhead wires of any kind in the SF area. They didn't have to tear up anything, really.

Most houses already have a conduit laid for pre existing lines. Its just a matter of fishing a line through the conduit leading to your house from the street.
