That a good choice 24' is very large still you will have 6 feet of desk to put your stuff on.

IT will be a very solid desk you won't need any support besides the 2 shelves.

2-3" thick oak is over double the cost of 1" thick oak...

It would be easier to do it this way.. PLUS it would look like it's 2 thick solid pieces however it's actually only 1 solid piece + a rigid skeleton underneath it to help with weight for moving...
