Edited post - so its going to have a back board and you want to mount a shelf using a post on-top of the desk as well?

No. Sorry, I've got a million ideas going through my head for this so I'm not describing it very well.

The top of the desk will be long wood boards mounted together on the underside. The support to hold the desk top up will be two book shelves with a 4x4 post behind the one on the left. There won't be any shelves on top of the desk. My issue right now is finding adequate book shelves to use as the base of the desk but I am having a terrible time doing so.

Is the oak 1 solid piece or sections?

If it's solid oak the bookshelves will support it fine with a post in the middle.

It's tough to say with out seeing exactly what you're doing - but from what i am understanding it will be fine.

It will be 3 8ft boards mounted together with a bracket underneath at two sections. I wish I could find one solid piece, but I can't find one anywhere. I've contacted Lowes, Home Depot, Menards, small business, etc. I just can't find one ANYWHERE.

It's tough - I have to see it - can you diy, do you have any carpentry skills?

Just keep this in mind - on a basic level a solid piece with 2 shelves and a post will be fine. With sections you're going to have sagging and thats quite the width.

You may want to consider making wide posts with a top like a crown at each of the 2 sections the boards meet. On top of the brackets you are putting.

What area do you live in?

I wouldn't mind helping you find a solid piece of oak

IF you are going to wall mount it (make a wall desk) I am doing to offer 1 bit of advice..

Use heavy duty L mounts with a cross section support... Use a few and make sure you are putting them into your wall studs and they are all level with each other.. if they aren't level (within a half inch) when you screw your top boards in it will tweek the interior screw and can cause it to strip messing up your support... level them within 1/8" if possible to avoid this.. this is specifically for the ones with a cross section support because they don't have as much bend as the ones without the support.
