Hello, I'm seeking some advice on whether or not to get an external sound card for my laptop or just a DAC. My speakers are active so if I do get a DAC I don't think I'll need to get a separate amp until I switch to passive ones. My budget is probably around ~300 but I'd prefer to spend no more than 200 or so unless it's worth it. I was hoping someone could point me in right direction or suggest other alternatives.

M-audio Bx5A. Also what are some reputable audio stores or websites where I can do some of my own research?

head-fi

This by far. http://www.Head-Fi.org is pretty much the leading place to go or http://www.innerfidelity.com for some awesome expertise. When I went into this expensive go-to home theater store. Bjorn's audio. I was able to meet up with the traveling rep for Sennheiser, who is a very cool guy, and he mentioned that most of them use Head-fi. Also got to test out some HD800s.

Broke my pair of RE-262's the other day, so I went down to frys to temporarily pick up something.

They had Monster Gratitudes on display for 200$, price matched to 59.99 through Amazon lol.

Actually not bad earphones at all. I'm surprised Monster was capable of putting out a decent non-overpriced product.

Can anyone recommend some audio specific retailers? Some of this stuff doesn't show up on amazon at all. I could also go in store if anyone knows any in nyc.
