"I built a farraday cage(-like-ish) around the modem with aluminum screen just to experiment. One layer is good, down from 2000+uW/m2 to 20uW/m2, adding another layer I'm down as far as 3-7uW/m2. No; they're laughing at you. They make a small profit over a large market share. They may only make 5-10$ from each kit but sell millions of kits. As opposed to making 200$ off a 300$ kit but only selling a few thousand. It called economics. If you can provide a reliable service more affordably than a competitor, you can gain a larger market share. Walmart for instance has a profit margin of ~3.5% per item after overhead. They make tons of money by having a massive market share.
