THIS...ever since they did away with PATA cables and rotated the hard drives ( in most cases) so the connection were near the right side panel, air flow issues, have pretty much gone away.

Now if you're building in a tiny SFF case, then yes, cable management may still be an issue. Other than that..is just for looks.
