Again, not being able to edit sucks.

Option #2 for surround, a bit cheaper this time, but of course these Daytons aren't as good as the Pioneers, but if $513 is just too much...

Dayton centre speaker: $50 http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=300-674

Dayton bookshelf speakers $30 X 2 = $60: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=300-652

Dayton 8" 80 watt subwoofer $80: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=300-627

Yamaha RX-V371 5.1 channel receiver $170: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004QQXDVC/ref=s9_psimh_gw_p23_d0_i2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0C6ZRQ459M94PR2TVJXT&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1389517282&pf_rd_i=507846

total cost $370 for the a full 5.1 package, again, all are real sized bookshelf speakers of audiophile heritage, using REAL speaker wire coupled with a REAL A/V receiver.

Not on par with the Pioneer setup, but still miles ahead of what best buy or walmart offers at the same price.

Just wanted to say thanks for the feedback! I really appreciate it! Great info and a great place to start a little research of my own

I will for sure pick up one of the desktop combinations.
I am going to get the surround sound when I move in to my new place. I will probably go for the ~$300+ option.

Not being an audiophile of any kind- I'm interested in hearing some of these crazy expensive set ups as compared to the cheaper ones and see if I can even tell the difference with m naked ear

Thanks again!

e) Theres good reviews on the dayton centER (*wonders if youre canadian* / huge red wings fan :p ) . But then theres some critical reviews saying it has poor sound quality past certain 350/150 hz points. I dont know anything about that stuff. Just thought I'd mention  I doubt I could even tell the difference anyways :p

okay i'm lost.

hooking up my reciever via toslink to my soundcard and i cannot get sound to come out of this thing.

tried different outputs, different settings on the reciever, going straight into my mobo.. cant get it to work.

i'm thinking it's a setting on my receiver that i am overlooking but i cannot see what that is.

reciever is a yamaha htr-6050 and soundcard is a xonar dgx.

You have to assign the optical to one of the inputs on the receiver (DVD/CD/MD/DTV/CBL, etc)

SET Menu > Manual Setup > Input Menu > Input Assign Select the appropriate Optical input (either Optical 2 or 3), pick what input the optical audio gets assigned to, then switch to that input when playing audio from the computer.
