I believe that a 4TB will show 3.63GB...just like a 2TB shows 1.82GB. Iirc a 1TB shows 1.91GB

/e It's just the way the math works out. The whole 1024/1000 thing. :)

ok thanks. yea it makes sense with the numbers now.

so.... i just want to do a few things

1) somehow run a test to make sure the hdd is a good one. like a stress test. this a good idea?

What are some good tests to run for this?

2) then partiton the hdd to have one partition equal to 1tb. so i can use it to make a backup of my main hdd.

3) backup my main hdd to the partition.

I think windows has a basic backup feature. this should be fine to use right?

Also, wondering if lets say my main drive fails. ill have the partition from this new drive to have the data. but what happens to my copy of windows? how would i recover that? i think ive heard its somehow tied to my motherboard? so as long as the motherboard survives i should be fine to install windows 7 on new hdd and use the new drive as main?

1. Doesn't need a stress test. Just get CrystalDiskInfo and CrystalDiskMark. The 1st checks if the drive is good. The 2nd checks the speed.

/e Get the portable (zip) versions.

There is some validity to wanting to burn in an hdd.

No there isn't. Lol

Unless you're a HDD manufacturer and want to sell more.

The backup software (for image backup) usually creates an encrypted backup that is much smaller than the amount of data on the HDD.

ive heard it isnt as simple to recover that information though?

but cloning a hdd, should take exactly the same amount of storage, as a downside. but on the positive, i hear is much much easier to get things running again with a clone.

It is for me. I have 27GB on my C: drive. It takes me 2.5 mins to make a backup. It takes me 5 mins to restore from one.
I use Acronis True Image. It allows you to make a bootable CD with the Acronis software on it. So even if the comp won't boot, you can get at your backups.

Every time I need to restore from a backup I use the bootable CD to do it.

/e Cloning is as slow as cured concrete.
