My HDD's tick when stressed and often keep ticking afterwards. Never bothered to find out why, just made assumptions like it could be related to small cache files stored on the HDD or something like garbage collection on SSD's.

Adds shouldn't tick though... They are not mechanical.

Either way it's pretty annoying. I wonder if there is specific power settings to tell the thing to goto sleep after so little activity.

You can create a Custom Plan, then choose Change Plan Settings, then choose Change Advanced Power Settings. In there, you can set the HDD sleep time. If that's what you're asking.

That's probably it.

What's the CD that came with the SSD for. Why would it need drivers if windows already supports trim and shit.

Unless it's come shitty disk cloning software.

Edit:: it doesn't let me choose which hard drive to put to sleep so I guess the setting effects both. Lame.

I think it just affects the OS drive.

The CD that comes with the SSDs, has both cloning software and some other utilities.

Still wondering about this thumping. Seems a few people are getting it across different models of WD drives but they don't tell anyone if their drive died or not or if they were getting any file corruption.

At the moment I'm getting really good performance (130-220mb/s) and the smart data is giving me 0 errors. I'm running a WD test utility for bad sectors at the moment but I assume it will be back clean.

Some users say it's the heads parking/unparking but I don't know why it would do that every 5 seconds when idle (in both windows and the bios/while booting). It doesn't happen when using the drive.

I think I might nuke the drive and buy another.

A HDD will "park" when idle.

?e That is to prevent damage to the head.

It doesn't keep parking though which is what he's saying.
I'd normally assume a live scan or such maybe but idk you setup on linux doubt u even run an av cause there jokes.
If its making a lot of noise call wd and dbl check with em, your concerns are valid.
Also I may have a extra spinrite license if you need it.

If you did infact get the one ghot linked they are known to be the nosiest aside from enterprise ones.

It shouldn't be parking every 5 seconds when the disk is idle, let alone during boot and while I'm in the bios.

I know their noisy but this isn't a standard noise to me. I've never heard a drive be so repetitive when idle.

Here is an audio clip: http://vocaroo.com/i/s1ps7AxlBn8z

You can hear it at 4, 9, 14, 19, 24

The WD test tool passed both the quick test and extended (the extended tests all sectors for damage) and nothing came up.

At this point I may nuke the drive tonight and get another one tomorrow.
