Knock yourself out when you get the chance, I'd love to see all of the amazing scientific testing done by random guys on the Steam forums.

Lol no brah it's just painful to argue a point with a bunch of people who know nothing about:

1. Drivers.
2. Linux.
3. Statistics and what constitutes proof.

Most of the discussion I find about this online are people who don't understand how drivers and graphics APIs work and think that somehow magically because Microsoft wrote it that DirectX is worse than OpenGL. At best Valve found a small optimization that for L4D2 gave it a boost running OpenGL. There is no technical reason that DirectX could be patched in similar ways to then get another small boost over OGL. This also doesn't mean that games other than L4D2 will be affected.

I concur, Microsoft is a monopoly... Steam helping Linux would possibly remedy this?

really the only monopoly they have left is the desktop market, I don't know if that is assailable yet, but we can hope.

The problem with "helping Linux" is that Linux isn't a thing. They would either have to help a specific distro of Linux (most likely Ubuntu, which has problems all it's own) or create their own distro. Either way you are going to have a monopoly on a single distro of Linux and on top of that Valve is going to have to convince all of these companies that do engine middleware to spend a lot of time, energy and money on a platform that has a minuscule (even compared to OS X) gaming market. This is an industry that's already plagued with a shortage of time and can barely even manage console to PC ports.

To add on top of all of that if they try to do this they will then get Microsoft on them and they have a lot of money to throw around. This isn't a fight Valve is going to win and I'm not rightly sure why they are bothering.

Why do they bother with a titan when games will be played on just 1080p televisions?

Surely a 7950 or a 770 is adequate.
