shut up evil
70 is perfectly fine with prime95
prime will give you like 10-15c higher themps
then in games

Ok first thing...the thermal paste ON the stock CPU fan/heatsink is fine....you only need BETTER thermal paste if ur using an aftermarket CPU cooler, or planning on overclocking.

ur temps are fine for Prime 95 on Intel CPU...and as Urban said: they will be higher running Prime than running games....thats what Prime is for :)

so...ur comp is fine....when you DO get ur thermal paste...remove stock CPU heatsink/fan.....clean the paste off the heatsink AND the CPU using 99% isopropyl alcohol, which u can get from the pharmacist at any drugstore....do NOT use the 70% stuff they have out in the store on the shelves.

After cleaning...wipe /dry with soft cloth....then apply a small dab of thermal paste to the top of the CPU...spread it with any small flat edged surface to a thin coat over the CPU surface...then re attach the heatsink...making sure you hear all the clicks...when you press the pins down....and press the pins down in a cross pattern like: NW, then SE then NE the SW etc. The pressure the heatsink applies to the CPU will spread the thermal compound evenly....too much paste is just as bad as too little. A thin even coat of about .2mm is plenty. (like the thickness of a business card)

Lastly make sure...to arrange all the cables in ur comp so they do NOT block the airflow from the case fans. Generally that means cables shud be LOW or to the far left side of the case....also put ur hard drive(s) in the lowest slot or the highest slot(s)...so THEY dont block the front intake fan as well.

P.S. yes white is negative....colored is positive....the manual that comes with ur motherboard....explains every step for building ur comp....and finally do not overclock anything...till u get Prime temps down to about 45-50C or lower, when running Prime on small ffts for at least an hour :)

and before you even think about overclocking....spend a few days reading how others have done here:

70c is a bit high for a non overclocked prime test. get something like arctic silver. ghot recommends some random ass grease, canadian makes love to some diamond caret paste. an aftermarket cooler like the hyper 212+ will help a lot. if youre getting 70c with an overclock, thats good.

noob cakes...stfu the paste I recommended...is better by far than arctic silver :/

It has the same dielectric properties...the same thermal dissipation, does not dry out like Arctic Silver, and requires no curing time :/

One, it's not random and two...like all you "kids" are always telling me....time to embrace the new...Arctic Silver is old, not as good as the newer thermal compounds, and you should stop recommending it to ppl on just momentum. Zalman, Tuniq, Shin-Etsu G751 are much better compounds...for a few reasons:

1. They don't harden OR dry out...a casual bump of the CPU fan/heatsink does NOT crack the seal and force a re-application.
2. They are MODERATE viscosity, which means easier application and much less chance of "squeeze out" or "run-out"....both of which are disastrous.
3. They have the same or better dielectric capabilities.
4. They has the same or better thermal dissipation.
5. When it IS time (for w/e reason) to remove and replace or change the CPU fan/heatsink, they are 1000 times easier to remove.

Tuniq, Shin-Etsu G751 A+ as well cough-cough...just harder to come by lol
Zalman is ONLY .40C less effective than AS5...and better in ALL other ways lol

Have a read, why don't ya ^

http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.php?option=com%5Fcontent&task=view&id=150&Itemid=62

and while ur at it...check these temps.....using the Zalman compound...load temps at top left.....idle at bottom right

Performance is the only thing that matters with thermal grease. There are no other ways.
