A4L has a lot of receivers to choose from. Just get one that has all features you need and is within budget. Yamaha / Denon / Marantz are the brands you should look for receivers. Here is 2.1 setup I would suggest to start with as you can add more AA monitors and/or AA center as well. Dayton also has sub-1500 if you need more power.

Friend wanted to purchase a 2k$ bose soundbar and I wanted to come up with something that would destroy this for his budget.
Found out he already has a decent receiver. So using that, I thought a svs 1000 paired with some monitor audio silver 6 would be a good match. I'll look into your links and I'll try to find a place to audition some stuff before buying cause he's skeptical
