because there was a very large time gap from when he left his home (which was Erebor, not Moria) and when he got to Moria. News doesn't travel fast among Dwarves, and it is possible that the Fellowship was the first to actually find that Moria was overtaken. It isn't a plot gap that Gimli didn't know about the Moria situation.
