Now that they can increase stacks to up to 16GB it's not as useless as you think. It provides a lower voltage for memory in a stacked configuration then what typical DDR memory requires. It actually allows the GPU to consume more wattage then previously to increase performance.
Eventually DDR memory will be a hindrance for GPUs to where they will hit the proverbial ceiling.
Yes will be needed but not for couple gens like usual
