Just going to add some fan girling about some software in this thread... pretend I'm Ghot and stuff.
HFS, the most magnificent tool I use pretty much on a daily bases which can be obtained from rejetto's website.
It is a file sharing HTTP web server written in turbo pascal. It is open source, free, and very very stable. It has hundreds of features as well as extreme stability for fast file transfers. I just finished transferring 100gb of vidya games over a gigabit switch at 60mb/s via firefox without any hiccups or troubles.
Some of it's features include:
- Downloading, uploading, deletion of files
- Virtual file systems (so that any changes to a folder will not be written to disk/files)
- Highly customizable (editing of the HTML service page, user accounts, user groups, speed throttling, ect)
- Easy/expert mode for all skill levels
- Logging (user access, who downloads/uploads what, ect)
- Full control over connections (can terminate/ban users real time, monitor what users are viewing/downloading/uploading, ect)
- Dynamic DNS updater (for those who give out their server details)
It is also compatible to run under WINE in Linux and is a single executable for minimum install requirements.
It also allows for setting up passwords and user groups for specific folders which I think is its best feature. You can setup users who are able to access your root directory, and then for special users allow who may access sub folders so everyone can only access what you want them to.
Here are some screen shots. Here is one of the software itself in expert mode with a locked folder so that only a user with the proper username and password may access it:
And this is what it looks like from a web browser viewing the files on the server:
From the web browser there are also options to browse and download the media. On the left you can see a folder area which allows you to browse the directory tree you have wandered down as well as a search feature to search for a keyword in the current directory you are in. There are also options called "archive" which archives the entire current directory and allows you to download it (which is great for transferring bulk files), as well as a "get list" button which converts all data in the current directory to direct links to the files for use in download accelerators or linking on forums.
I've been using this software for a long while know but I haven't really told anyone about it. It is a bit of a hidden gem not a lot of people know about.
edit:: I also take sexy as fuck screen shots... just a FYI.
