Well I don't know what speakers you have listened to but if it makes it sound closer to headphones for sure I don't want that kind of downgrade. As with my current setup no headphone comes to even close to the performance of my speaker setup. Stax SR-L700 how ever is coming really close but after all they are earspeakers, not headphones. And for atmos you would need to install speakers on ceilings to get best performance and that is really not an option in apartment.

I don't game with my HT setup so I don't care what is more accurate for gaming in mind. For surround sound there is a lot more than just the positional accuracy. Most of current content is only in 5.1/7.1 so having atmos won't give you much over traditional surround setup. I myself prefer accurate sound reproduction over fancy things like atmos which atleast for the moment is just a hype to sell more receivers / speakers, and I know many tho think the same. As for 5.2 vs headphones the sound quality and accuracy is much better with my surround setup compared to any headphones I have heard. Positional accuracy might indeed be slightly better with headphones to certain point but for overall sound real surround is superior if you have good speakers.

Manufacturers have to push new features every year to sell their new products, if they didn't they wouldn't sell so well. That is just marketing. Of course there will come some usefull features as well, like room corrections, wireless connectivity and so on. Atmos for the moment is just like 3D was for HT, new feature with pretty much no content to work with. 3D is already dying as close to no one wants to use it in HT as it does not offer real benefits. Time will show how it goes with atmos.

Funny you bring THX up as it actually has lost most of its value already. Many manufacturers have stopped to pay for the THX certification as it doesn't offer real value anymore and the certificate is quite expensive. THX certifications pretty much are a ghost from past and today are used for marketing, you can find cheap computer speakers with THX certification and they sound quite terrible to be honest.

Height direction is only point where traditional 5.1/7.1 system falls back for headphones/atmos, for surround effects how ever 5.1/7.1 sounds better than headphones as you actually have different speakers producing different sounds from the soundtrack like they are supposed to and not combined like you hear from headphones as many real surround tracks have many things going on simultaneously. And like pointed out already, there is close to no content for atmos yet so you wont benefit from atmos either.

I never said these things don't work, I said they don't offer real benefits specially when you consider the added costs. Who was talking about using receiver only for music? For myself I use it for 50/50 on music/movies.
