if there's no giant feature one cpu offers over another that performs ~about the same~ you'd be dumb to buy it to begin with
getting an 8c/16t cpu for the same price as a 4c/8t intel cpu is a lot to prompt that purchase though

If we take their claim that they gained 52% IPC from bulldozer at face value, you could extrapolate 52% more IPC from something like the 8350.

the 7700k at 4.5ghz has about 62% better single core performance than the 8350 @ 4.2 ghz.

so probably close to but still less than the 7700K which makes me sad because I have no reason to take advantage of the 6 or 8 core for pure productivity reasons.
