Yeah, it should magnify the sound.

Wew used to do that to find which part in a car engine, was making "the noise", back in the day, when folks still worked on their cars. :)

The power supply could still be working, even though the bearings on the power supply fan are going out.
So the paper clip test won't help in this case.

/e Btw, you want your ear pressed against the end of the piece of wood. You're not looking for vibration, but for sound.
The piece of wood will act like a sound magnifier. You won't be able to mistake which fan is causing the noise. It will be VERY loud, through the piece of wood.

Oh nvm, thought it would kick on the fan inside the psu with the paper clip test

Stick your finger in the PSU OP. Make sure it's wet first.

why can you just unplug your case fans one at a time....

then obv if there is still noise, its the PSU fan.

and you dont even have to touch wood

It takes like 3 seconds to touch the wooden stick to something near each fan.
On top of everything else, most wooden clothes hangers have a straight crosspiece for hanging the pants on. So a nice 16" wooden dowel is easy to find. :)

Instructions unclear. Caught my penis in the fan blades.
