+1 for buying vintage speakers.

You can get some really high quality towers for cheap now a days.

I would rather own a pair of $1000 towers from 20 years ago than new crappy $100 towers.

Bring your receiver and a bit of speaker wire and listen to them first.

I would double check the specs on your receiver. It will list which impedance(s) it can handle (provide). 6 ohm, doesn't sound right?

/e I would expect a receiver could do 4 and 8 ohm... maybe more these days.

i have the str 550 - it says 6 ohms, but i guess it can be used to power speakers as low as 6 and up to 16 ohms.

My bad, too used for pricing for pair instead of each speaker..

Infinity have had some good speakers, but hard to say again how you would like those.

High end receivers can handle different impedances quite well, but lower end receivers might have problems. How ever those infinity are sensitive speakers and should be easy to drive.

There are some 6Ohm speakers out there. Most receivers have either 4 or 8 Ohm but what ever speakers you use you should keep your receiver at 8 Ohms if there is switch for it.

my receiver does not have any switch for that lol. its a cheap receiver.

the speakers i am looking at are all under $50 for a pair. super cheap also

Iirc, the audio signal coming from the receiver is already amplified and if you add another amp between the reciever and the speakers, it will load the receivers op amps (big transistors), and burn them out.

But it has been a while...might want to wait for someone more familiar with today's gear.

/e P.S. Those speakers look pretty beat up.

The only way you can add an amp between a receiver and a set of speakers is by using RCA preouts from the receiver. RCA preouts are non-amplified, so there is no cascading of power to the speakers.

i do have two RCA preouts for my receiver i believe. its a 5.2 receiver. so one of the RCA is for my subwoofer. hmmmm but i wouldnt know how to use the 2nd RCA preout to an amp and then from the added amplifier to two speakers? like i dont know if the receiver can then distinguish between left and right speaker. i feel like what i just described is stupid and wont work well lol?

Your Receiver can power TWO subs, that's why there are two RCA preouts.

Also, from the specs, it doesn't look like you will even need an amp tween the receiver and the speakers. That receiver puts out plenty of wattage just the way it is.

In general, receivers have internal pre-amps and internal amps. You CAN go from pre-amp to amp to speakers, but not from amp to amp to speakers.
I would imagine your sub(s) have their own internal amp, which is why your receiver has two RCA pre-outs.

The regular speaker outs on your receiver are coming straight from an internal amp, so you do not need another amp tween the speaker out and the speakers.

Your rca outs are for subs. Low end receivers usually dont have pre-outs and they start to appear on receivers that cost 500$ and more. Your receiver should be fine to run towers on its own like has been said already.

ok thanks all. so one of the people responded finally and said the rubber foam is actually falling apart. i still want the speakers but the person is shit when it comes to responding to my texts... i might pick them up anyway and refoam them. its the infinity cs3006.

i can get the pair for $20... lol but each speaker has a 1inch tweet, a 5 or 5.5 inch speaker and a 8 inch speaker. so would i probably need to refoam both the 5inch and 8inch speaker on both? so thats 4 repair kits? and ive only seen repair kits for 8inch. never seen one for the 5inch?

It depends on kit as some come with 2 surrounds and some with one. Just measure the surrounds and buy kits with same measurements, there is refoam kits for 5" elements as well but not at parts express. Check some videos like this and you have idea what to do: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jwcfP5pKeek

Edit: And hard to say without seeing would you need to refoam both 8" and 5".

thanks. yea i watched that video yesterday when you posted the link for the foam kit. it was helpful. it almost makes it look too easy, to the point where i am worried lol. its just cut, remove the old glue with basic isopropyl alcohol, then glue the new rings on
