Not to buy a monitor...

if you want to buy a 1440 monitor, then yes

else youre just going to have to scale it down, which defeats the purpose

A 1440p or 4k monitor is out of the question for you until you get a new video card.

Any 24"+ / 1080p / IPS monitor will do. You can get a FreeSync ultrawide 75Hz one for not too much.

What does displayport have over DVI (I'm seriously asking, don't know much about either besides they both digital)

So if a 1440 monitor is out of the question, and I already have a 1080 IPS, the only real upgrade would be an ultrawide. How is the support for these in games? Will I still be able to run games at high settings with my current setup?

Dvi is more than capable of carrying sound, Just most devices don't support it.

Bandwidth. D-Port supports way higher data rates than DVI does.

I would just get a new GPU & Keep your monitor for now.

So if I always use either external speakers or headset, there's really no advantage to d-port at 1080? And then if I wanted to upgrade my gfx card, what would be good in the ~2-300 dollar range?

Also, bit off topic, but can anyone explain in relative detail, how different games benefit from certain hardware components? IE league of legends is much more ram/gpu based, whereas minecraft is much more CPU/Hard drive based is it not? Where does it draw this line (running out of space on my SSD, need to move some shit to HDD).

I remember using a 2 pin jumper cable on one of my gtx 260s from motherboard so i could use dvi to hdmi cable to tv

Whatever you get make sure you can use displayport later
