Large speakers are physically built larger. The actual sound-making components are bigger. The only exception may be the tweeter. For mids and lows especially, larger speakers don't play as well at low sound levels. This is a characteristic you'll notice (or not, apparently...) if you pair a consumer-grade amplifier with the speakers. It's almost impossible to adequately power large consumer-level speakers with a consumer-level amplifier, and get excellent sound at low sound output.

On the flip side, take something like a very small well-built speaker, that doesn't require as much amp power. At lower levels of sound output, you'll get a better range of sound output.

This is to do with how they're built physically, and the power output needed by the amp.

Apparently you don't know so much about speakers. If you look at speaker sensitivity bigger speakers are often more sensitive than smaller speakers and this makes them actually easier to drive than small speakers that often are not so sensitive. Bigger elements actually require less power than smaller elements to produce same spl at low frequencies as the bigger element doesn't need to move as much as smaller element to produce same spl. So bigger speakers often require less amplification than smaller speakers.

*facepalm*

I hate talking about speakers with people like you. Mindless arguments driving home one point over and over, no reasoning with you.

I bet you'd argue that Klipsch produces amazing consumer-grade speakers too...

What receiver? You may have to assign the optical to a specific input on the receiver.

Mindless arguments and no reasoning? Hate to talk to people that know more than you do? Speaker impedance and sensitivity are the things that matter when you look for amp. Consumer level amplifiers are more than capable to run large speakers if the impedance is matched and the speakers are sensitive. Of course if you have speakers with low impedance and low sensitivity you will have problems with low end amplifiers. 8Ohm impedance and 87dB impedance is no problem for low end amplifier, unless your space is really big and you like to listen really loud. As in small room and normal listening volume you are using only few watts to power them.

As for great speakers that is quite subjective as every one hears differently and prefers different things, so there is no best speaker, only best speaker for you. Some people like the sound of Klipsch, I personally don't.

You seem to be so educated on speakers and amplifiers that perhaps you should enlighten me how to match speakers and amplifiers correctly? Or choosing correct speakers for your room? And don't mind giving some scientific proof for your claims while you are on it.

So you admit you were wrong. Was trying to help your father for not having bad advice to downgrade hes good speakers dramatically as I believe he likes what he has and enjoys it.
