ur guess would be i already answered that
it was pre applied thermal compound
Yeah, I would assume that. I'm suggesting you buy a tube of thermal compound and redo it.

This is the stuff I have used on every PC I've built...never had an issue.
http://pcpartpicker.com/product/8Mzv6h/zalman-thermal-paste-zmstg2This stuff needs no curing time. It never dries out. And it benches within 1C of any thermal compound out there.
/e If you are in a hurry though...I'm sure best Buy will have some so-so stuff.
/ee I am assuming here, that you are using a CPU cooler that is not broken and is attached properly.
The trick to thermal compound is ....not too much and not too little, and if it's the kind that "dries" even bumping the CPU cooler can cause it to break the seal and defeat it's purpose.
Also, you can't just remove the CPU cooler and then replace it, with the same thermal compound. That creates microscopic bubbles, and that will make it not work properly.
When you remove a CPU cooler...you need to clean the old thermal compound off, and replace it with new stuff.
When you turn the computer on and it runs for 5 mins and shuts down...it's generally caused by heat. Aka, bad or worn out thermal compound... CPU voltage set too high in the BIOS...
I guess a bad power supply could do this as well. But the 5 mins thing, makes me look 1st at the thermal compound, then the CPU voltage...and lastly the power supply.
