Is there a general rule at what point a custom water loop along with overclocking gives better price vs performance than siimply buying "better" parts with cheaper air or AIO cooling?
Full custom loop allows you to unlock a chips full potential for 24/7 usage.
The price vs performance standpoint is basically, Performance of the part you buy running at it's theoretical watercooled maximum vs a higher end part running at it's air cooled maximum.
IE. A 6600K running at 4.8-5 GHZ vs a 6700k running at 4.5ghz on air. This may take a bit of digging to find those specific benchmarks.
The chip Cost Delta is $100 in this case.
The water cooling Delta for a cpu block (divided out of a full loop) is roughly $150 for the block + fittings and tubing and 1/2 of a pump/reservoir/coolant.
TL:DR Go for the best parts you can and don't get a custom loop until you can put a custom loop on the best parts because the performance gain is 10% or less over a good AIO water cooler or good air cooler. This post was edited by kclla on Aug 15 2016 08:56am
