Note: M$ support for Windows 8 has ceased. So if you are still running Win 8....upgrade to Win 8.1 immediately.

...and YES, there is yet another "upgrade to Win 10 nag, in the updates for Win 7 and probably for Win 8.1 as well.
Thank gawd for GWX Control Panel...

If you are running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, go to the START Button and in the Search Box type: Services.msc and hit the Enter key. This will open the Services window. Scroll to the bottom and set Windows Update to Manual and leave it set to Manual.

Go to this site: http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/ ...and download: GWX Control Panel. Get the one that says: * Download Stand-alone *, save it to your desktop.

Run the GWX Control Panel program, that we downloaded above. Starting from the top is should read:

(App not found)
(App not found)
No.
No.

If any of the 5 items do not read as above, then just use the corresponding tool (one of the 4 long buttons) down below to fix the issue.

Microsoft releases Windows Updates for Windows 7 and 8.1 on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. So each month on the 2nd Tuesday...
Open START > Control Panel, and click on Windows Updates. A new window will open and in that window, click on "Check for Updates".
NEVER install any Optional Updates. Install all the rest that show up. Computer will want to reboot...let it.

After running Windows Updates, you will need to run GWX Control Panel again, to make sure the 5 items stay the same as listed above,

It should look like this, when it is finished:

Also in the news today:

Microsoft no longer supports Internet Explorer 8, 9 and 10

LOL

Anyways just did Windows 7 M$ Tuesday Updates, and nothing obviously wrong with any of them. GWX Control Panel shows no Win 10 crap, so that's good. ( I always check GWX Control Panel before and after Windows Updates, so folks who don't do that, may want to check after this Tuesday's Windows Updates).

There is also an update for Firefox, to version 44.0.1, and an update to Adobe Flash Player for those that need it...to version 20.0.0.306.

My how times have changed. :)

New shape-memory polymer can lift 1,000 times its own weight.

There are polymers that are strong and polymers that are flexible, but what about one that can be either one? That’s what researchers from the University of Rochester have developed. This material can be stretched and contorted into almost any shape, then you apply some heat and it snaps back. The kicker: It snaps back with so much force that it can lift 1,000 times its weight.

The material has a default shape, which it remembers despite twisting and stretching. That’s why it’s known as a shape-memory polymer.

Nickel titanium Alloy (Nitinol), circa 1980's. <--- I remeber reading about this in Scientific American. They had some kind of costest, to see who came up with the best use of it. (No idea who won).

Quote
Nitinol alloys exhibit two closely related and unique properties: shape memory effect (SME) and superelasticity (SE) (also called pseudoelasticity (PE)). Shape memory is the ability of nitinol to undergo deformation at one temperature, then recover its original, undeformed shape upon heating above its "transformation temperature".

/e They can both be made in almost any shape. I remember lots of the ideas for Nitinol's use were in cheap but powerful engines.

Wow, two in a row...

Kids will soon make their own toys with Mattel’s $300 ThingMaker 3D printer

The new ThingMaker is definitely the 2016 iteration of Mattel's original ThingMaker, which debuted in the 1960s and let kids pour liquid plastic into toy molds and then bake them in the oven to create figurines.
