I like my klipsch S4i and have for a while but CNET got me spooked with their "in ear headphones cause long term damage" article

Wonder if it's time to go over the ear :(
Audio so expensive

You can damage your hearing with over ear headphones as well if you listen with too high volume. Volume point might be lower with in ear to do damage, but if you are reasonable with your volume with in ears you have nothing to worry about.

1570 replies, damn O.o

Still rocking my AD-700's when I even use headphones, otherwise for night time I use a Creative 4.1 that has to be going on 15 years old, and my surround sound is a JVC 5.1 that is easily 12 years old. Havent found anything better that wasn't hundreds or thousands of dollars to set up ;-)

Far from a toy, this is 100w per channel, 8-16ohm system with optical input, it isn't the latest or the greatest but it does dolby PL2, and with a few small 3-ways for FR/FL and a few sony mids for RR/RL, plus a Polk center channel and sony sub, it does kick out some great audio for movies

It gets the job done, I bought a $250 Yamaha 7.1 receiver and it was shit in comparison, I picked up this receiver for $20 at a garage sale, 10 years ago

Watts means close to nothing alone tho and same goes with ohm ratings. Creative and JVC haven't produced anything spectacular for audio world unfortunately. You got 250$ receiver and expected big results with toy speakers? For 250$ you can get pretty amazing used receiver to start with. But speakers are the most important part of sound production. Even an amazing 2k receiver won't turn toy speakers to sound like a good speakers. It is much better to get decent receiver and good speakers to start with.

You say you have that and that but you never say exactly what you have got. :)

THIS

...and watts per dB is the most telling number for speakers. Like 98w/dB are great speakers

Not really. It just tells they are easy to drive but that doesn't necessarily mean that the sound quality will be good. And I believe you are referring to dBW, sensitivity dB as it is usually put out. 98dB sensitivity how ever is something producers put out but when it is really measured it is not that high. Usually good speakers range from 88 to 93 dB when measured correctly. Sensitivity how ever means almost as much as the pure watts and ohms. More important is the frequency graph the speakers can output and how much distortion do they have. Crossover in speakers is as important as the elements itself. Even really good speaker elements can sound pretty awful if the crossover is poorly done.

Receiver is JVC RX-5020
Center is a Polk RM-7
Sony mids are SS-U31's (rears)
Fronts are KLH S-Pro4's
Sub is in the closet not being used at the moment, it is a Sony 8" and is also at least 10 years old

Is it the best system? No
Can you do better for what I paid for the whole setup? NO

Receiver $20
Center $50
Sony Mids $2 each
KLH fronts $30/pair
Sony Sub $100

Everything but the KLH and Polk is 10 years old, at least...still going strong, I would say I have gotten my value out of it

I also have a pair of large Yamaha 3-ways, don't use them at the moment because they are about 2' tall, the pair of those was $40 or 50.....
