So here's what I would do...

Start off with a surround receiver and nothing but a pair of floor standing speakers to fill up your $300 budget, that way you'll be getting the best two speakers you can afford at the moment, and its not like you need any more than 2 speakers for music and sports anyways.

Andrew Jones' Pioneer speakers trumph pretty much anything in this price class at $120:

http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-FS52-LR-Designed-standing-Loudspeaker/dp/B008NCD2S4/ref=pd_sim_sbs_23_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=1F999EH10XC03GEE9Z92

and then a cheap but decent receiver like this from Onkyo for $160:

http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-SR313-Channel-Theater-Receiver/dp/B0077V8930/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1432764793&sr=8-2&keywords=Onkyo%20receiver

That's well under 300 bucks and you might be happy with what you already have (a 2.0 stereo), but in the future you can upgrade your system, first by choosing a suitable subwoofer:

Andrew Jones Pioneer sub $145 : http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-FS52-LR-Designed-standing-Loudspeaker/dp/B008NCD2S4/ref=pd_sim_sbs_23_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=1F999EH10XC03GEE9Z92

Now you'll have a complete 2.1 stereo that gives you the option of going from stereo to surround once you've got more to spend.

Pioneer centre channel speaker $100: http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-C21-Speaker-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B004MF4S0M/ref=pd_sim_23_4?ie=UTF8&refRID=1JZV9XN3YBVYFBM6Z9RD

Pioneer bookshelf speakers to use as rear speakers, $70: http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-BS21-LR-80-Watts-2-Way-Speakers/dp/B004MEWZE4/ref=pd_sim_23_10?ie=UTF8&refRID=09HYP1FT95VQ7GZX1KXF

voila, that's your 5.1

Start out with 2.0 .. buy a subwoofer (2.0 --> 2.1) for xmas for example and then maybe next summer get the rest of the system. (2.1 --> 5.1)

Edit: Don't forget your speaker wire! Just buy the cheapest you can find on Amazon, shouldn't cost more than a few dollars per speaker.

How do I know if I need a receiver? Im such a noob :(

Im reading that they dont really make 2.1 systems for TVs, only computers?

In my family room I sit about 10 feet from the TV. Its not a big space.
I would rather not run cables across the room for behind the couch so I am thinking 2.1 is the right way to go right?

I think you guys would shoot me if I went for sound bar yea? So logic says 2.1 is the way to go. Is that right? How do I know if I need an amp/receiver to go with it? :(

Thank you

was looking at 2 Dayton speakers + Lepai LP-2020A. Is that not fit for TV?

What maker/model is your tv? What outputs your tv has? And what Dayton speakers you were looking at?

Edit: You could run surround speaker cable by walls, thats what most people do.. Looks pretty good that way and wont cause any problems.

Also 3.1 setup is pretty nice with good speakers if you dont want surrounds, but 2.1 is almost as good. 5.1 for movies is really nice tho.

What are you gonna pair them with? I've heard that you will either love them or hate them.

I really have no clue what im doing though :(

PudzianGoat tried to offer some help a couple posts earlier and was very in depth but I dont know when you need a receiver/amp or when you dont.

I just want an affordable set of speakers with good sound at a good price to watch sports/movies/music through my TV with.
I dont need an entire surround set up rigged up. I just want an improvement over my TV speakers that people wont lul at
