Back in the day it was worthwhile selling to advertisers but nowadays I wouldn't know.

there are to many ways to monitize a botnet now a days.

selling visits, selling installs for other malware, selling cracked hashes (using the botnet as a distributed cluster), selling bandwidth services, data mining and selling of cdkeys and personal info such as emails, the list goes on.

but now a days you dont see any real botnets. mostly kids with copy pasted source code using 100 node nets to kick other kids off xbox.

I think the largest one I used was around 70k or so.

Back then it was all about personal information & advertisers.

Because I wanted to keep it going.

With all the Chinese government hacking going on, has anyone thought of how much stuff from companies like Lenovo might be manufacturing altered products? Back doors, altered firmware, alter operating systems, etc. With all our computer stuff being made in China we could be giving our "secrets" away.

Thoughts?

I wouldn't doubt that it's happening. I think it's in this thread I mentioned that china was adding third party PCB's to IOT (internet of things) products such as fridges and teapots n stuff. The PCB's would scan for wifi and attempt to deliver malware payloads.

I think there was also something about the NSA intercepting a shipment of routers and adding third party backdoored firmware onto them.

It's bound to happen if it isn't already and the only thing you can do is learn how to encrypt everything and check the integrity of your hardware yourself.

Then I have some learning to do. China has threatened the US with action if we continue to "accuse" them of hacking. We have put our country in an interesting position by not being the manufacture of the products we use in a digital age. My phone was made in China. Wonder if they have my pin number and emails, etc.
