I have a GTX 1070 and I play at 1080p 144hz. In games like The Witcher 3 or Tomb Raider my GPU will max out and I hit anywhere from 70-110 FPS typically. I play those games on ultra high settings with Nvidia Hairworks on and all that jazz. So honestly 165hz is not going to matter in the really demanding games like that, even with a GTX 1080 ti. And keep in mind we are only talking about 1080p!

I see people often talking about 1440p or 2160p monitors with high refresh rates. Uh there is no CPU and GPU that exists that can make demanding games perform at high frame rates on those big resolutions. Even with a i9-9900K and RTX 2080 Ti you will get dips below 60fps on 1440p in the most demanding games (thought generally it would be in the 70-120 range (finally 1440p is almost worth using!)).

Ideally I don't like want anything below 90 FPS when gaming and I want the best graphics they can offer me. So if you care about high frame rates I'd recommend staying with 1080p and only going to 1440p if you're buying the best CPU and GPU.

"acceptable experience" is highly subjective. I like frame rates and max settings. Some people seem content to sacrifice frame rate for a bigger screen and/or possibly a sharper looking image.
I'm not saying to not use a 1440p monitor. I'm sure they look great and being able to go up to 27" must be nice. Just dont expect to be using that full 144hz+ you paid extra for.

You dont have to take my word for it.

1440p is just finally worth using if you're willing to spend the extra $500-1000 to get the best CPU, GPU, and that expensive monitor that will be worth far less in a couple years.

People do have budgets sometimes. And some people prefer high frame rates on max settings in the most demanding games. You can love and hate 1440p and 1080p all you want. What we like doesn't really matter to other people.

Just wanted to put out a word of caution that people need to go all-out to make 1440p shine in the most demanding games.

Ya know what I think is hilarious? That would be the gaming/hardware industry. It's a perfect example of: "create a need, then fill it".

We are talking about "games" folks. There is no need for a game to be so demanding, so there is also no need for the hardware to be able to process that much information.

Definition of a gamer...

A bunch of guinea pigs used to drive computer technology forward for the rest of us. The hardware will NEVER exist that will run the most demanding game effortlessly. I mean look at which games actually HAVE the biggest following in raw numbers.
They will be stupid cartoonish games, that will run on almost anything. Hell the game that put Nintendo on the map was a fooking 2d side scroller.

The best part of the internet, IMO is that it let's a pile of people get together for w/e reason. Games are just a tiny subset of that experience.

I mean honestly, do we really need another 1,000 particles in an explosion? Isn't the explosion itself, all that we need to know that we blew something up.
Sure, rapidly developing tech for things like real time, deadly accurate video during say a brain operation is a great thing. But just remember that "everyone" does NOT have to be one of the "guinea pigs" that drives that tech.

IF you have money to literally burn, then go for it. Otherwise just get w/e you CAN afford and others spend their money, to drive the tech forward.

Keep in mind that game developers these days, aren't really doing THEIR best to write concise, efficient code for games. They are just slapping it together, fast, to get the kickbacks from the hardware companies.

the 1080p vs 1440p discussion is pretty stupid IMO because its mostly personal preference

there is different types of games and gamers people

alot of people still prefer 24" 1080p, and saying that is dead is sooo freaking stupid

alot of people have switched to 27" 1440p which is nice for alot of eye candy games, mostly single player tho

sure for my single player adventure i would like high resolution, ultra graphics with perfect shadows and ray tracing, but for competitive games i dont care about that stuff
