I read somewhere some bios' won't let you use a any old disc that you install windows on. You might have to use an actual windows disc or a recovery disc that came with the laptop

Make model of laptop?

Nope, all good. Can boot from usb

Hit f12 repeatedly when starting it up. Can select usb (one time use) from there

Wouldn't it be faster and cheaper to just go to friends house? :p
Did you get the right one? Your product key might have 32 bit or 64 bit listed next to it. If not, I'll need the model number to look it up

Loosen a single captive screw on the P75-A7200's bottom access panel, and not only can you easily add an SSD or second hard drive, you'll find two open SODIMM slots for adding more memory.

Just get a 2.5" drive.
I would go SanDisk for $80ish

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/MDBqRG - 84, best bang for buck imo
