Thanks for the tip.
I will probably pick up a surge protector when I replace the drive. I am not overly concerned because it wasn't a loss of anything critical. I'm not even sure if it was a brown out or just the drive dieing of natural causes.

It's a UPS, Not just a surge protector.

I know. I've been using worthy power for 5 years so as you can tell I'm not too concerned. :P

you think that can handle overclocked 8700k or 7820x, oc'd2x1080ti, 16 fans, 4 ssd, 4 hdd, with few other devices and add on cards?

Maybe, but it's not even a pure sine wave inverter so some power supplies might not like it.

To answer op's question, yes it can.
Not providing enough power can easily cause it to shut off and corrupt system files and other things.

I've been reading a lot of mixed messages on surge protectors, brown outs, etc. with a lot of people saying that surge protectors really do nothing for computers during brown outs.

As for the hard drive (external, at least) I thought pulling the plug only ruins it when you're transferring/using files on it.

UPS helps during brown outs, soon as its not able to pull X watts it will kick over to the battery.
At which point your safe for a bit to shut shit down.

If the device is in use and it fails to receive the power it needs it can power off enough to be disconnected from the system.
ever unplug a hardrive while its running? trust me when I say theres a lot that can go wrong.
