The 7820x is a worse chip for gaming, as its single thread performance is lower.
However it has much more cores, so any task involving more cores will see a large performance uplift.

I believe that you would be fine with 16 pcie lanes, as many tests have shown only minor performance uplifts when having more lanes.
In the end, if you were going for high end, i'd get the 7820x. It's a better chip overall for your uses.

If you were concerned actually concerned about cost/these factors, you could probably solve your problems by becoming an AMD fanboy, as they currently have the best offering for an 8 core/16 thread, with more PCIE lanes and similar performance at a much lower power cost/monetary cost.
:p

Well I don't care about your synthetic benchmark wanking sites either. Keep living in your fantasy word but try to stop spreading misinformation.

The lanes can be a bottleneck at 8x, they won't always be but it can happen. That's something you have to deal with when you go for a cpu with such limited lanes and expect to sli high end cards like 1080 ti's (which aren't comparable to 970's)

If you want to invest in a setup like that without being able to realize the full performance of it, then stick with the 7700k.

the gap between a single 1080 ti and a 970 is similar to the gap between a 780 ti and a gtx 660. Why even compare their ability to saturate 8x?

Yeah makes sense you're trying to defend your terrible choices as a consumer to go with 16 lanes for 1080 ti sli, it's a defense mechanism. I understand now.

I was leaning towards the 7820x to begin with, will I really notice a big dif of .3-.5 ghz of speed? When most things gaming related are gpu dependent anyway?

Tell me more about how much of a difference it made in your 3dmark and unigine heaven scores
Those are the two best video games on the market right now and OP is probably going to be playing them so it really matters.

Not so much no.
The differences in gaming will be very small.

The other note is that the biggest differences begin to only show once overclocking, as the 7700k will OC higher.
So if you do not intend to OC the differences are even less significant (game performance wise).
