Reporter: Can you explain this smart watch and fit watch craze?
Manufacturer: Well, a medium size group of young folk have too much leisure dollars floating around. One of our youngest and brightest interns, came up with the idea of inventing some useless piece of wearable hardware to soak up these excess leisure dollars.
Reporter: Well how did you convince this portion of the consumer base to fall for these devices?
Manufacturer: That's the best part. We didn't have to convince them of anything. We have already conditioned them to purchase anything that was "new and just created". Whether or not it was useless never entered the equation.
Reporter: But surely, at least some of this consumer base would catch on to this insanity?
Manufacturer: We were concerned with that as well. But it didn't turn out that way. After years and years, the conditioning (buying things that no one would ever need) has become so ingrained, that no one even thinks before making these superfluous purchases, any more.
Reporter: Almost like a license to print money then, wouldn't you say?
Manufacturer: I'd have to agree. We are, as the old saying goes, 'laughing, all the way to the bank'.
Reporter: Do you have any concerns that the consumers will catch on to this ploy of the manufacturers?
Manufacturer: Not at all. Our ONLY concern is that we will run out of ideas for useless things for the consumer to purchase. But then we thought of lighting for various computer parts. I guess the Pavlovian response to our marketers is now so ingrained, that no one even stops and considers those things anymore.
Reporter: Can you tell us what marketing event, originally put you on to this idea?
Manufacturer: [leans closer] To be honest it was watching the clothing industry.
Reporter: You've lost me there. What event in the clothing industry, caused this revelation?
Manufacturer: [leaning even closer and whispering] Well, when we realized that consumers were willing to pay exorbitant sums for 'get this' , torn clothing that appeared to be worn out, well, we just couldn't let this marketing niche pass us by. It was almost as if there was a growing segment of deranged consumers.
Reporter: Well, thank you for clearing this up for us. I guess the old saying: A fool and his money are soon parted", seems to have hit the mark, this time?
Manufacturer: [chuckling] You got that right, my friend.
A story about someone buying GPUs they don't use.
Sorry, someone had to say it.
