I think the point is that he can profit because rx 480's price has skyrocketed for some reason

i noticed this the other day when i suggested a used 480 to someone the looked them up and realized.... wtf theyre 300$ used

Yeah AMD's cards are good for compute, nvidia's are only good for gaming so despite the gaming performance difference its not surprising the 980 ti is cheaper

Less power required = better for their uses
That may not even be the case though if the memory buses are always 256bit...what are 8gb going for anyway?

Most likely it's the best perf/watt + perf/$ for compute.

Not sure why 8gb costs so much more though, regardless of vram they should perform identically. Personally never saw much vram utilization in the bitcoin mining days of Tesla/GCN 1.x.
