I'm trying to help a friend figure out this mac.
I don't really know much about macs but ive been tinkering.
It's an older mac, they just use it for basic stuff as a backup or whatever.

in any event, they tried to turn it on and it stops at the grey mac logo.
I have tried all the boot commands but none of them work. verbose mode is the only one that worked and it freezes after maybe 30 lines of text pop up.

I've already done several google approaches, but so far just nothing gets me into the laptop.
Either way, right now Im suspecting some kind of hard drive or motherboard issue just due to age. the hard drive WAS replaced 4 years ago.

Past that I'm looking at any ideas if someone has other ideas, or maybe even confirmation story from someone else who this happened to.
let me know if anyone has any info :D

Sounds like the HD crashed. Gotta replace it

Load OSX from a working Mac onto an external drive(can be USB, just has to be bootable) and make sure it's a version of OSX that this particular Mac can run. Probably 10.6. If it boots then you have a HD issue. If it still doesn't boot could be something up with the logic board.

Hard drive looks good. nothing alarming and passed some tests.
I also took out ram and cleaned it, was pretty nasty.

Still freezing in verbose mode and a few other commands I tried did not work.

Should I still pursue to install an OS (im unfamiliar with how hard this could be if i have no mac software) or chalk it up to something unresolvable for an 8 year old mac.

edit: valuble info may be: this laptop is heavily smoked in. their grandma used it a lot before she passed and she was a smoker, so i am also assuming that may have an impact. (as you rip it apart there are ashes around...)

I would yes.
If you encounter issues then take it to a real tech as no one here can really assess the problem.
