If it IS a legit copy, Microsoft can re-activate it. A clean install is necessary.
He'll have to make the USB/CD or buy another copy.

Seems like the whole directory where the key should be stored is missing. I believe it would be no trouble to reuse the key after formate.

just so you know in case,

windows boots up, and shows.

internet will not connect and other things such as restore points and things similar are locked.

You can always get a windows disc from microsoft for like $7 in shipping.


Or... Download ISO on cellphone -> Transfer it to the PC -> Make a USB from it -> ?????? -> Profit

Like I said, he still needs to do a clean install.

Upgrade to 10 when you are done.
