You can find a skylake/kaby i5 with 8 gb ram and 1 TB HDD for around this price. Shouldn't need more than integrated GPU if you're playing "simple" games.

The point is that everything in that price range is going to be pretty much the same, the only real difference is going to be the brand

For the wife I recommend a tablet laptop duo, usually around your price range you can find a decent enough one.
