Again these cost money to own, but owning tools that will save you headaches in the future are worth owning. If you use pc's like I use them, you know lifetime for standard HDD is 1-5 years and 25% of HDD's go out in the first year. SSDS are getting better but they range 3-5 years. this doesnt mean you wont come across a dud that dies in a year, if you don't save your content to a external device or, if your pc/laptop can run muti hdds/ssds saving to the secondary one is also important, just stay smart and always back-up your work and you will be good of course!
Always note, if your running a laptop, using a cooling fan underneath that plugs into a use drive saves your HDD from overheating and replacing drives faster, SSDS run cooler, but again you need to allow the heat from the MOBO/Processor a chance at some cool air, if your smothering your laptop, your frying your drives faster at a higher rate, not to mention your prob frying your MOBO at the same time. Use a program to check your core temps/along with a gpu temp also, these will help you keep your laptop running at optimal speeds/without harming the components on the inside of your machine, I use CoreTemp and due to using a GTX GeForce Gfx card they come with drivers that moniter my temp on there. Just like a car we need to maintain it otherwise they will go out faster. Not saying this happens everytime, but 90% of the problems I run across is because people don't treat their laptops nicely by setting them on surfaces flat with no air-flow underneath!
