Talked with a Microsoft representative... thankfully he understood my situation and gave me Microsoft 10 for free even though the free upgrade period is well over by now. yay

I didn't know lol. Never received false info like that before. It's my fault though, I did minimal research before the reset.

Dude, you didn't receive false info. AIDA64 will give you your Windows w/e key and then you can just DL Win 10 from Microsoft. As many times as you like...and ART knows this. :/

You don't have to pay for Windows 10. Even though it's after the cutoff date. You don't even have to call Microsoft.

If you have a problem with my advice, just PM me. :)

/e When the person who gave you the laptop, used it without any concern for infection, it's best just to do a factory restore.
If you don't, you'll never know for sure, where the problem lies.

As you well know...I was a Windows 10 beta tester, and since July 29th, I have tried MS's new methods of getting Windows 10 only about 5-6 times. :/

Since I have an awesome backup system, I can just delet my Win 7 partition and test MS's promises, all I want. And I have. Nice try Art.

@OP... I don't always watch the topic "last poster" but I always check for PM's.

Since Factory Restore partitions are encrypted and invisible to the OS, they are very hard to infect. Doing the Factory Restore was the only way to be sure.
Well, I guess you could have spent 2-3 days on Bleeping Computer having them try to un-infect it.

It's a chick not a dude.
You can't upgrade for free anymore they only extended it 1 week for people with disabilities that use the special features.(IE magnifier/speech to text)
You are right she could have just used her key on the bottom since she upgraded before but only cause it was upgraded before.
Windows 10 has a built in refresh option which is the same as a fresh install but you should know this after all you did use windows 10 right?

The refresh option is not as sacrosanct (infection wise) as a Factory Restore is.
And ANYone should know that. :/

Like I said, nice try Art. :/

/e Here's a case for a Linux live CD. http://forums.d2jsp.org/topic.php?t=75029921&f=199

And we ALL know it's been years since I've messed with Linux. :)

Basically a clean install but done without the external media for files.

Windows 10 you have to purchase now, they stopped this July 29th for the free editions of Windows 10, if you didn't get it at that point you now have to pay for it, THAT being said you can still install windows 10 onto a pc without a activation key, but in-order to recieve updates you need to purchase a Windows 10 key. Much like Windows 7 if you don't have a key or lost it, you would have to buy another. Unless your like me and save all the keys of bad laptops, because you then have keys that are still valid on fresh installs, this doesnt apply to Windows 10, this is based on the MOBO and after you install windows 10, it registers your mobo to the Windows key thats assigned to your email. When you sign into your windows account after a fresh install you will have to remove the old PC from your Microsfot account to obtain the key that was tied to the old machine, then resign the new install to windows which will Activate it.
