No, unfortunately, those aren't the capacitors ppl refer to when they say: "The capacitors overheated". These caps are the one "around" the CPU socket. They are large, like wooden pencil erasers.

That is physical damage, in your pic.

/e ....lemme guess. It's a socket 1155 motherboard?

no its an 1150, i thought he had a 6600 but i guess not, he said it was a z97

so its safe to assume this socket damage isnt what caused his computer to stop working in the first place then?

No, it isn't. That kind of socket damage would definitely cause problems.

right, but in order to damage it he'd have to remove the processor, which he didnt do until it stopped working, unless it was already damaged and by some miracle worked for a few months?

Well, yeah, but since this is all 3rd party info....who really knows.

/e Over the years when they came out with new sockets or made CPUs that would work in old sockets....occasionally, there have been unused pins.

More likely...

He took CPU out, saw some TC in socket tried to clean it...slipped and bent or whacked the socket. Even if he did do this, they should have stilled RMAd it. Benefit of the doubt, so to speak.

If he's lucky. :)

/e If it was a manufacturer defect, it either wouldn't have worked from day 1, or it wouldn't have worked for months and then failed.
