You can get servers off ebay and craigslist for 200-300$.
I got a 8 core 64gb 2u rack mount server for 150$, just needed to add drives.
If you have plans to use the server for anything else besides running a game server only when you and few of your buddies want to play, buying the hardware from ebay is your best bet.
