This seems like a decent option but I'd prefer something that I didn't have to set up.

If someone could ballpark it, how long would it take to set it up from start to finish with no previous experience using a Raspberry Pi in any way?

What are the pros/cons of each?

I heard Apple TV can run Kodi only if you do a sideload or something.

20 minutes?

Buy a kit with NOOB already installed (Auto installer for w/e you want) And you just plug it in, Press "Install xbmc" Set up your wifi & pretty much done.

Seems like a lot of work

if your lazy/dumb sure.
But once you do it you could buy x amount of sd cards and replicate it and setup a ton of these on each tv.
learn something in the process and have a diverse piece of hardware that can be used
in many many ways just by switching out the sd card and adding 1-3 more parts to it.

Examples of what I've done with mine with my son so far.
Made..

-an alarm clock
-day/night vision time lapse camera
-vpn
-remote pen testing system
-light shows with leds via pin out
-xbmc server
-local FM radio transmitter
-arcade machine

next the plan is a pi phone and buy 3 more to make a cluster.
