so ive got a usb stick that i just transfer movies to, and then plug in the usb to my tv to play movies in 4k hdr. because for some weird reason i cant get the hdr to work through hdmi from pc to tv. I am using windows 7 still, not sure if thats whats stopping the hdr from working.

but my question is, since it takes like 4 to 5 hours to transfer movie to usb stick, can i just use a usb to usb and then would the TV recognize my hard drive within my tower? or does it not work like that?

like a usb port in my tower connected to the tv?

The easiest way is to just run an HDMI cable from your vid card to the TV. Then use Nvidia Control Panel and VLC media player to watch the movies, stored on your HDD, on your TV.

i have amd video card. and while i can watch movies via hdmi, it does not transmit the HDR metadata or whatever its called. and the hdr is not displayed. i can use software to mimic the hdr effect and simulate it. but it is not true hdr unless i use a usb stick

It has to do with transcoding. The TV can transcode the native file off USB on it's own, but the HDMI feed from the computer requires the transcoding to be done on the computer end, and depending on what GPU you have, would be why you can only get software mimicking it. The video card also has to support HDMI 2.0, and older cards aren't going to support that or native HDR.

i have amd r9 270x. i thought it was due to not having windows 10?

since usb sticks work fine. im wondering if just a usb to usb would allow the TV to read the video files on my hdd?

i did a quick search and it looks like the 270x can do hdr?

Ok, how about an external HDD that runs on USB?

/e Wouldn't that act just like a huge USB stick? The TV can use the stuff on the USB stick, because it's hooked directly to the USB stick...I think.
A USB cable from comp to TV wouldn't be the same?

But a USB cable from and external HDD, would be like a USB stick.

im wondering if the hdd from pc will be recognized by the tv and able to view the files from usb to usb though

You can try it. I doubt it will be recognized. But I don't know for sure. I just think I would have heard about it long ago, when I was searching for ways to view my movies (on internal HDD), on my TV.
