Sup

So my disk usage goes to 99% a lot...

“Reset” my computer last night and still having issues from what I can tell without playing a game

I have a 3rd gen I5 3.xghz quad core

16 gig ram

New geforce gfx card

Curious if anyone has solution to this because I lag on games I shouldn’t be and I’m pretty confident it’s because of my disk usage percentage.

Should I just upgrade my hard drive to an ssd (which would require me to buy a new windows I think.. worried friend may of installed a cracked version when my psu went out)

Or is there any other remedies or potiental issues?

Really appreciate help

Download Process Hacker and view -> tray icons -> i/o history + disk history and see what's using all the resources when this happens.

What are you using to monitor the hard drive usage?

Get ssd.
Clone your old drive over, no need new windows/etc.

If cloning is not feasible, suck it up and do it anyway, I recommend. Not worth spending all the time/energy trying to fix a slow thing for it to remain slow and cause more issues later.

Tadk manager is notorious for reading 99% even when your hdd is only using 1mbps

I’m also lagging while it does this

What’s a better way to test this?

Check for superfetch running, in the list of things and stop it. This started in Windows 8 and they never fixed it.
As soon as you do something it locks up and spikes in disk usage.

Could be a few other things like updates but superfetch is common.

that's the funny thing about disk usage, 1mb/s could take nearly all of his drive's seek time if it's random ops, or it could be barely 1% of what it can handle sequentially. ssd's also have a disparity between sequential and random speed but it's not as big, but this has always made it nearly impossible to make a viable disk usage percentage... every single i/o workload is so different in the speed the drive can perform it at, so disk usage graphs tend to be relative; if you've had no activity for awhile anything will put it up to 100%.
