I can get some a pair of some pretty cheap vintage tower speakers in my local area. Some look like they used to sell for 200 or 300 bucks. But then again these speakers were made back in 1985 or 1990. Super old speakers.

Ive heard that these speakers can have the cone wear out and need to be re-foamed. I guess the parts to refoam a pair of vintage speakers can cost quite alot and the labor looks like more than i would want to do.

Any1 own a pair of some vintage tower speakers? wondering if its worth it to get a cheap pair.

only concern is if my receiver can power them. it looks like a pair can take up to around 300w. not sure if its 300w for the pair or per speaker. Can i somehow add an amplifier to my receiver inbetween my speaker?

edit: it looks like the pair i am looking at at set for 325w per speaker... lol my receiver can only push 90 RMS (watts) per channel

I wouldn't use old speakers.

But, it's 300w per channel (right - left ...etc.), and I'm assuming the audio signal to the speakers is already amplified, so it probably wouldn't be a good idea to add another amp.

the speakers are passive so they dont supply their own power

found a link to someone else selling them in another state

Iirc, the audio signal coming from the receiver is already amplified and if you add another amp between the reciever and the speakers, it will load the receivers op amps (big transistors), and burn them out.

But it has been a while...might want to wait for someone more familiar with today's gear.

/e P.S. Those speakers look pretty beat up.

By the picture the cones look to be in good condition so no need for reconing, how ever it is quite cheap to recone for example 12" driver here is kit you would need: https://www.parts-express.com/parts-express-speaker-surround-re-foam-repair-kit-for-12-speaker--260-930 and you should only recone if the cone is broken, no need to try repair something that aint broken.

Power rating in speaker is maximum power it can handle and power rating on receiver is maximum power it can output. I can't see info for impedance and sensitivity but I would assume that your receiver should be fine to run those speakers, as old speakers usually are quite sensitive. In normal room you are only using few watts for normal listening volumes so receiver should be fine to run those speakers.

What is most important how ever: Do those speakers sound good to you? As that is where you should start from, audition speakers with content you are familiar with and see if you like the sound or not.

the first tower speakers i posted are 43inch tall. and the 2nd, the braun are around 22 inch tall. both are decent sized. but the first ones, the KLH have a much bigger woofer, but take much more power...

yea true about if they sound good to me. but ill be buying them locally from some random person who probably doesnt know anything about speakers and i doubt they can hook it up to test it out. it would be nice yea. i would want to see that they work at the very least. im torn between which ones i should get. i really do like the super large speakers lol.... but the 2nd pair i listed are much fukin older, from 1976, that scares me, like they will burst into flames lol

oh wow, i thought the refoam kit needed to be specific to the speaker being refoamed?

Like said, it is maximum power they can handle, not the required power. In normal listening you are only using few watts. Speaker / element size has close to no effect on the power needed. It is more of your room size, desired listening volumes and speaker sensitivity.

The speakers in the pic you posted, only need 5w to work. They will "handle" up to 325w.
