I was playing Dota 2 one day, and was prompted to do some sort of update relating to something graphical. Wanting to just play the game I clicked "continue".
After that my screen went black. I force restarted my computer, BIOS would splash, but as soon as the Windows OS would try and load the screen would not display properly.

I tried many different fixes...

  • Reinstalled OS
  • Tried Linux
  • Tried Linux Live
  • Updated BIOS
  • Updated GPU BIOS (nvflash)

Still, didn't work. I thought the GPU was fried because I was able to display from onboard. However I thought this was unusual because the BIOS splash would display.
As a last resort I brought the GPU to my friends house and tried it in his computer. Booted first time, no problem.

So I've concluded that somehow the PCI-E slot on my motherboard isn't working. So basically an update somehow broke my PCI-E slot, or it's just coincidence.

Have you tried removing the bios battery and clearing the system of power?

Tried clearing system of power. Haven't tried battery.
/e I thought battery was just for system timers.

The battery saves ALL bios settings.

so your gpu worked when reinstalling OS but when you enter windows it doesn't?

The GPU won't work when I try to boot into any OS. Even after reinstalling. The only thing it will show is the BIOS splash, the windows loading logo for about 2 seconds, then screen goes crazy. Gray lines, coloured lines, etc.
Same thing happens when I reinstall OS or boot to a Linux Live distribution. You think resetting motherboard BIOS would do it? (Though this would be strange because I've never touched the motherboard BIOS settings).

When you tried linux Did you install the drivers for the card? Try running off onboard & installing the correct drivers in linux if you have not already

Edit: just noticed it won't load into linux either. Try running onboard & through terminal check if the slot is reading the card? Also is there power getting to the card at all?

doesn't matter at this point, he's clearly stating the main clear signs of a bad card.

True!

I just had a weird idea that since it worked on his friends pc with no errors maybe a power supply is failing and it's not getting the voltage needed for the card if he's using a lower psu

I missed that part. Though unless its stressed on new pc maybe just luck idk.
I guess it could be mobo or psu though, but even still when a psu doesnt usually have enough wattage the system tends to crash flat out.
