Depends on the kind of failure.
If mechanical nothing will work short of a data recovery center.

If you need to rebuild the partition table or misc things Testdisk
Basic recovery file recovery > PhotoRec, Ease Us, Recuva (in that order imo)

If your real adamant about recovering data get a secondary drive and use spinrite to try and make a recovery clone of it.

pretty sure ease us has a free version. photorec is 100% free though and I don't use recuva but i assume it has a free/paid version.
spinrite is paid but its the best out of them all.

looking into photorec now - it says it can recover photos and documents - jpeg, html, pdf, movies etc , but makes no mention of songs? Do you know if it recovers mp3?

e/ nvm looks like it can!

Try Recuva. If it doesn't work...get Spinrite.

if he cared about the data that much he wouldn't keep wearing the drive down... as thats literally the worst thing he can do to a failing drive (keep using it)

Im using recuva atm

finished the scan and the positives is that it found all 906gb without any hassles or deep scan required

however, only some of the programs are green lighted (excellent / good condition) .... will the program be able to restore the red lighted "unrecoverable" programs ?

It'll try at least.

/e From what I've read, most folks recover the green 1st, then TRY to recover the red.
