Got a 4K Samsung tv two months back. Tried hooking up the older receiver (4 years old). The receiver doesn't handle 4K so I hooked it up to receive sound via hdmi from the tv. This did nothing... didn't work. The tv communicated with it and turned it on, but no sound. I tried optical just to see, still nothing.

I have tried every setting in the book. The receiver isn't compatible. But I don't know why??? Would a new receiver hit the same issue? We don't want the receiver handling video signal since the Samsung one connect works fine.

It's Samsung's one-connect. It's supposed to support either. I have tried both.

Yeah that's why I'm really confused. I thought maybe the HDMI wasn't working because the receiver wanted a video signal, but optical should work at the very least.

I've set up lots of TV's with receivers and everything before. I've tried going into every setting in the TV. I've also tried going into the receiver and changing every setting, resetting it, etc.

Cables are *definitely* in the right spots. But I've also tried putting them in the incorrect spots in every combination just in the hopes something weird might get it working.

Receiver is supposed to be plugged into HDMI slot 4 on the One Connect for Samsung, and the Samsung was set to all the correct settings (and I've tried incorrect ones). The receiver also has been set to all the correct settings (and wrong combinations as well), and I've tried every in and out HDMI slot on the receiver.

What's making me scratch my head is that the optical plug-in isn't doing anything either. The TV registers that it's sending an optical signal, but the receiver isn't registering anything.

That sucks, have you tried the 1/8th or RCA outputs just to see if its an audio module thing?

Did you use the arc hdmi connection on your tv, as that is only hdmi connection on tv that can output? Or what ever it is called in that model.. With both arc/optical out you need to change from your tv settings to output audio in those outputs instead of tv speakers. And then select the input you put the cable on your avr, should work after that.
